The Thompson Creek molybdenum mine operates on public and private land in Custer County, Idaho, about 20 miles southwest of the town of Challis.

Most of the molybdenum produced at Thompson Creek is used as an alloy to make high-strength and corrosion-resistant steel.  It is the fourth-largest molybdenum mine in the world, processing about 30,000 tons of ore each day.

Molybdenum is a locatable mineral under United States mining laws.
