In 1978, the BLM began reviewing the lands it administered to ascertain which of them possessed wilderness characteristics, as defined in the Wilderness Act (1964). This review was conducted in each State in three phases: Inventory, Study and Reporting.

The information below represents the work completed for public lands in Idaho during Phase III (Reporting). The Report contains the BLM's recommendation of suitability or non-suitability for Wilderness designation of each WSA. This information was transmitted to Congress through the Secretary of the Interior and the President.
Congress has designated some WSAs addressed in the Report as Wilderness and released all or portions of some others.
