In 1978, the BLM began reviewing the lands it administered to ascertain which of them possessed wilderness characteristics, as defined in the Wilderness Act (1964). This review was conducted in each State in three phases: Inventory, Study and Reporting.
The information below represents the work completed for public lands in Idaho during Phase III (Reporting). The Report contains the BLM's recommendation of suitability or non-suitability for Wilderness designation of each WSA. This information was transmitted to Congress through the Secretary of the Interior and the President.
The list below groups WSAs in Idaho by District (region). Click on each WSA name to visit the BLM-Idaho webpage for that WSA. Click on PDF to the right of each WSA name to view or download the part of the 1991 Report which relates to that area. To the far right are links to the Phase II studies that address each WSA.
Congress has acted to designate some WSAs addressed in the Report as Wilderness and released some others for multiple use, superseding the recommendations in the Report and the associated Phase II studies.
