Recreation

In addition to being a hotspot for birdwatching, visitors can sightsee, trail-ride in cars, trucks, jeeps, motorcycles, ATV's, ride on horseback, hike, hunt, shoot recreationally in designated areas, mountain-bike, picnic, and camp.

CJ Strike Reservoir - a popular boating area in the Birds of Prey National Conservation Area

Spring and fall weather conditions in sheltered canyon areas average 5-10 °F warmer than temperatures in nearby Boise.

This makes recreation outdoors possible in the late winter, spring, and fall when many higher-elevation recreation areas are still affected by weather.

During the months of March-June varmint hunters, target shooters, hikers, mountain bikers, and float boaters enjoy the outdoors along with raptor-watchers.  On hot midsummer days, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, power boating, and fishing are popular on the Snake River and on CJ Strike Reservoir (pictured above), a 7,500-acre impoundment of the Snake and Bruneau Rivers in the southeastern portion of the NCA.

Special Recreation Permits are required for commercial or competitive use, vending, individual or group use of special areas, and organized group activities or events planned within the NCA.

BOATERS - BE AWARE OF A NEW STATE LAW!
The Idaho Invasive Species Law and Boater Registration
Under the new law, any boat that is registered in Idaho or another state, and any non-motorized vessel (canoe, kayak, raft, drift boat, etc.) will be required to purchase and display IISF stickers in order to legally launch and operate in Idaho. Inflatable, non-motorized vessels must be less than 10 feet in length to be exempted from this requirement.
