Season Passes Available Now for Blackwell Island Launch

COEUR D’ALENE, ID – The highly anticipated boating season on Lake Coeur d’Alene is just around the corner! The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Coeur d’Alene Field Office has season passes available for purchase for Blackwell Island Recreation Site and Mineral Ridge Boat Launch. Season passes are $40 per year that can be used at either site. The daily rate at either site is $6.

Season passes can be purchased at the BLM’s office located at 3815 Schreiber Way in Coeur d’Alene. Lobby hours are from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Beginning in June through July, season passes are also available for purchase on site at Blackwell Island on weekends only.

The Blackwell Island boat launch and picnicking area will open on May 24, dependent upon water levels. The facility does not open until the end of May to accommodate waterfowl nesting in the area and fish-rearing in the nearby waterways. Fluctuations in the water level due to spring runoff have sometimes cause delays in the opening date. Mineral Ridge Boat Launch is open year-round and is a popular launch site for area fisherman.

With the pending closure on June 1 of the City of Coeur d’Alene’s Third Street Boat Launch, alternative launch sites, including BLM’s Blackwell Island and Mineral Ridge, are expected to be congested this summer. Boaters are encouraged to get out early on weekends or take advantage of non-peak days during the week. Although Blackwell Island can accommodate up to 135 vehicles-with-trailers, it is not uncommon for the facility to reach capacity by midday on warm summer weekends. Boaters are also reminded that the gate to Blackwell Island Recreation Area is open at 5 a.m. and is locked at 11 p.m. nightly. Extended vehicle parking is allowed for up to three days.
