“Remarkable Raptors” Event Sure to Be a Hit with All Ages

Do you ever wonder about the lifestyles of the magnificent raptors that grace the skies? Where the owls that scan the forest floor at night hang out during the day? What do they eat and where do they sleep? Come join the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the Idaho Fish and Game and the West Valley Outdoor Learning Center for the second annual “Remarkable Raptors” presentation and learn more about our local birds of prey and their habits on Saturday, September 29.

All ages will enjoy the live educational birds and mounted specimens used during the evening presentation to provide participants a “bird’s eye” view of the many species of raptors and owls that live in and around the northern Idaho area. The event is free, and a great opportunity for a fun-filled family evening outdoors.

The program begins at 6:00 pm on September 29 at the BLM’s Blackwell Island picnic pavilion. Blackwell Island is located just across the Spokane River south of Coeur d’Alene along Highway 95. Parking fees will be waived for those participating in the evening event.

For additional information about the evening presentation, please contact BLM wildlife biologist Carrie Hugo, 208-769-5048; or Suzanne Endsley, public affairs, 208-769-5004.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
