SALMON, ID – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Salmon Field Office is submitting grant applications to the Idaho Parks and Recreation (IDPR) and seeking public comment on funding for the Salmon Area Trails, the Salmon Field Office South Half Travel Management Implementation and the Tower Rock Camp Ground Improvement projects. The Salmon Area Trails project would construct 1.1 miles of trail along the Salmon River. “This trail would provide a multi-activity recreation opportunity for members of the community who need or prefer a structured accessible trail,” said Liz Townley, Salmon outdoor recreation planner. “It would be accessible for non-motorized uses, and based on interest from the community, the BLM anticipates it would be used by people who need a flat surface for walking or pushing a wheelchair, families with young children, as well as joggers and people looking for an easy after-work walk.” Public comments for the Travel Management Plan Implementation project were sought through a series of public meetings in Salmon, Leadore and Tendoy in the spring of 2012. The goal of Travel Management Planning is to provide a broad range of motorized and non-motorized access while sustaining the health of our public land resources. The Tower Rock project would install a drinking water system in the campground and increase parking space. Work on these projects would begin in the spring of 2013. Grant applications are due January 25, 2013. For more information on the grant proposal or to get involved with trail projects, contact Liz Townley by January 13, 2013 by phone at (208) 756-5431, by email at etownley@blm.gov or by mail at Bureau of Land Management, Att: Liz Townley, 1206 South Challis Street, Salmon, ID 83467.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In Fiscal Year 2012, activities on public lands generated $4.6 billion in revenue, much of which was shared with the States where the activities occurred. In addition, public lands contributed more than $112 billion to the U.S. economy and helped support more than 500,000 jobs. |
