IDAHO FALLS, ID – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Idaho Falls District with offices in Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Salmon, is currently accepting applications for the 2012 fire season. To apply, visit www.usajobs.gov and search for job announcement BLM-FIRE-2012-019. Wildland firefighting is a very diverse profession and provides a wide array of job experience. Firefighters learn how to run firefighting equipment such as chainsaws, wildland fire engines, water pumps and other mechanized tools. They also learn how to read the weather and record it; efficiently dig fire line; safely cut down trees; conduct safety briefings and drills; and a wealth of other useful skills. “Becoming a wildland firefighter can lead to a great career with many opportunities," said Richard Zimmerman, Idaho Falls BLM Fire Operations Specialist. "You spend your time working outside, get to see some great country and learn valuable skills.” Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Online applications must be received by January 31, 2012 for first consideration. For more information about wildland firefighting positions, contact: Richard Zimmerman, 208-524-7603 (Idaho Falls) Dan Zajanc, 208-478-6351 (Pocatello) Jeff Knudson, 208-756-5197 (Salmon)

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
