Fireworks Illegal on all Public Lands in Idaho

BOISE, ID – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is taking action to keep Idaho’s public lands safe from human-caused wildfire this summer.  A new BLM Fire Prevention Order for this fire season is effective immediately that makes fireworks illegal to use or possess on the nearly 12 million acres of public land managed by the BLM in Idaho.

“Idaho’s public rangelands and forests are no place for fireworks,” said Leonard Wehking, State Fire Management Officer for the BLM.  The U.S. Forest Service and Idaho Department of Lands also prohibit fireworks on the public lands they manage.

An above normal snowpack and a mild spring have kept fire season in check so far.  But according to Wehking, the recent warm weather has Idaho’s rangelands ready to burn.  “The vegetation is drying up rapidly, with the hottest months just around the corner.  Wildfires in high grass and dense vegetation start easily, spread quickly and can be difficult to control.”

“We want to do everything possible to reduce the number of wildfires across the State of Idaho,” BLM State Director Tom Dyer said.  “For public and firefighter safety and for the health of the land, the new Fire Prevention Order makes good sense.”

Along with fireworks, the BLM Fire Prevention Order prohibits the use of incendiary or tracer ammo and explosive materials, including exploding targets.  Carrie Bilbao, BLM Fire Investigator for the Boise District, said, “Tracer rounds, steel bullets and exploding targets are becoming more and more common every year.  People are able to buy these materials over the internet, at gun shows and at some sporting goods stores.  They can easily start a wildfire.  People need to be aware of what kind of ammunition they are shooting and what types of targets are safe for the area in which they are shooting.”

Every year, both legal and illegal fireworks account for dozens of wildfires across Idaho.  In some western states, all fireworks are illegal year-round.

The new BLM Fire Prevention Order is effective immediately and will be enforced.  Violation is a Class A misdemeanor, and subjects can be cited and fined and can serve jail time.  In addition, violators who start a wildfire can be held liable for all suppression and damage costs.

Under the Order, the following actions are prohibited on all public lands managed by the BLM within the State of Idaho, unless otherwise authorized in writing:

Discharging, using or possessing fireworks.
Discharging a firearm using incendiary or tracer ammunition.
Burning, igniting or causing to burn any tire, wire, magnesium, plastic or any other hazardous or explosive material (including exploding targets).

The Fire Prevention Order will remain in effect until October 20, 2008.  BLM officials will evaluate the effectiveness of this order over the winter and if appropriate may determine to issue it again next year.

Please help protect your public lands!  For a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July weekend, BLM fire officials recommend the following fireworks safety tips:

  • Check to ensure that you are in area where fireworks are legal.
  • Only use fireworks in a cleared area, preferably pavement or dirt.
  • Keep a hose or bucket of water handy for emergencies and to dispose of used fireworks.
  • Look up and around for flammable objects, including overhanging trees.
  • Always have an adult present.
  • Keep fireworks, matches and lighters away from small children.
  • Light one firework at a time and move away.
  • Use only legal fireworks sold from a licensed retail stand.
  • Do not use fireworks on public lands in Idaho.
