Black Canyon
General Location: About 8 miles northeast of Howe, Idaho
Natural Features: Predominantly natural with opportunities for solitude and primitive recreation. The WSA’s landscape is characterized as rocky canyons, massive cliffs and thrust faults. The lower slopes and canyon bottoms contain sagebrush, forbs and grasses typical of low moisture, high desert environment. Patches of juniper trees are found throughout the area and small stands of Douglas-fir grow at higher elevations. The WSA receives most of recreation use in the spring and fall. During these times, the rock climbers use the numerous canyon roads to get to limestone "climbing walls." In the fall, hunters use these same roads to hunt big and upland game. These canyons are also rich in Native American shelters and hunting blinds containing pictographs.
