Wilson Butte Cave

The Mystery of Wilson Butte Cave
 

Wilson Butte Cave sits on the Snake River Plain not far from the southern Idaho towns of Twin Falls and Shoshone. From the outside, it is doesn’t look like much of a cave, but when you walk around it, you’ll soon discover an opening near the base of the mound of lava. Inside, the room is shaped like an oval that rounds to a dome at the top and was probably formed by expanding gas from volcanic activity. The dirt floor is mostly below ground level so you descend about 6-7 feet as you enter. Evidence of water on the walls and ceiling indicates that the cave may have been a water source for occupants in periods of greater rainfall.
