Travel Management
The Salmon Field Office Travel Plan (North Half) and Environmental Assessment is currently underway. This comprehensive travel planning effort encompasses about 160,000 acres of public lands located in Lemhi County, Idaho. The primary goal is to officially designate over 550 miles of inventoried roads and trails as open, closed or open with limits to public use.
For nearly a year now the Salmon Field Office (SFO) staff has been reaching out to the public, user and resource advocate groups, and local government officials to determine what kind of transportation network would best meet varied public expectations and needs. In response to a host of travel-related issues and public comments and concerns, the SFO has developed 4 alternative transportation or route networks, including a proposed action. Maps of each alternative are available for review at the Public Lands Center, 1206 South Challis Street, Salmon, Idaho; and under the “Maps” link on this site. The comment period for review of the alternatives ends October 19, 2009.
The next step in the planning process involves taking all the information and input we have gathered to date and prepare an environmental assessment (EA). The EA will include descriptions of the effects for the each alternative and determine how each will affect the overall quality of the human environment. If the impacts of this analysis are determined not to be significant (see 40 Code of Federal Regulations 1508.27), the BLM will then select an alternative, or that combination of alternatives, that best achieves the purpose and need outlined in the planning process.
This website will be updated as the travel management plan progresses. If you have any questions or would like to comment on the ongoing plan please contact the Salmon Field Office using the information provided below.
