Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and Backcountry Byway

Description: Along the Lewis and Clark Backcountry Byway, visitors can explore the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and the Continental Divide National Trail, visit the homeland of Sacajawea and the Shoshone, enjoy beautiful scenic vistas and observe abundant wildlife. The historic setting and sense of place are still in-tact.

Caution:
The area is very remote. Bring water, food and emergency supplies. Bring a coat because it can snow any day of the year on the Divide.

Single lane dirt and gravel with pull outs. Passable with passenger car. Good tires are recommended.

Lewis and Clark Backcounty Byway Guide

Directions: Approximately 20 miles south of Salmon, Idaho within the Lemhi Valley near Tendoy, Idaho. Follow Highway 28 south to the Tendoy Store.

Allow 3-4 hours to travel and explore this scenic 39-mile byway.
