Owyhee River Wilderness

Approximately 267,328 acres of public lands
previously inventoried in the Owyhee River Canyon,
Owyhee River-Deep Creek, Lookout Butte, Little Owyhee River, South Fork Owyhee River, Battle Creek, Yatahoney Creek, and Juniper Creek Wilderness Study Areas

Some lands in this Wilderness lie in the area
managed by the BLM Bruneau Field Office.


More than 517,000 acres of public lands in southwestern Idaho have been designated as Wilderness. Lands from 9 former Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) in the Owyhee Field Office are now part of the BLM's National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS).

Lands within Idaho included in these former WSAs but not designated as Wilderness, along with all lands in Idaho included in the Big Willow Springs, Squaw Creek Canyon, Middle Fork Owyhee River, and West Fork Red Canyon WSAs, are released for multiple use management under the Owyhee Resource Management Plan (RMP).

The BLM is developing plans for managing these Wilderness areas according to guidelines in the Wilderness Act, and for the waterways designated as Wild & Scenic RiversView detailed maps (PDF) showing the Wilderness boundaries by clicking on the thumbnail images below.
