Silver City
In 1866, this mining town had 3,000 residents, but today only a handful of people reside in the town, part of the year. Visitors can enjoy the partially restored historical buildings and old mine sites. Owners of homes and other buildings in town have title to the land directly beneath those structures, but the rest of this National Historic District is public land, managed by the BLM.
Location: 70 miles southwest of Boise, in the Owyhee Mountains
How to get there: From Highway 78 near Murphy, turn off at the Silver City sign. From Jordan Valley on Highway 95 near Sheaville turn off to Silver City.
Facilities/Fees:
- Unpaved country access roads not recommended for low-clearance vehicles or trailers
- Primitive campground with six sites and one toilet
- Picnic tables
- Fire grates
- One vault toilet in town, another at Ruby Junction on road into town
- No potable water
In the summer of 2009, the toilet in town was refurbished using funds allocated under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The campground toilet was also improved. In the spring/summer of 2010, a second toilet will be installed at the campground, and the existing toilet at Ruby Junction will be replaced.
