Camping

Camping is allowed on the BLM lands thoughout the NCA. There are, however, areas that are more popular than others. The area along the Snake River below Swan Falls Dam is a popular camping location. There are no designated campsites, but the BLM has placed metal fire rings at the more popular locations. Two (2) vault toilets are located approximately 3 and 4 miles below the dam.

There is a 14 consecutive day limit on camping at one spot on all BLM lands.

Cove Recreation Site on C.J. Strike Reservoir is the NCA's only improved public campground within the NCA. Facilities include drinking water, fire rings, and picnic tables. Fees are charged for day and overnight use of the site.

On the south side of the reservoir and west of Cove Recreation Site, the Black Sands RV Resort offers campsites with full hookups, restaurant/bar and boat launch. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the NCA. Avoid areas where birds are nesting and observe these low-impact camping practices:

  • Pack out all trash.
  • Use stoves instead of campfires wherever possible. lf you must build a fire, use a firepan and burn only dead and downed wood. Before you leave camp, make sure your campfire is completely out. Touch the ashes or wood with your bare hand. Scatter unused firewood and dispose of your ashes.
  • To dispose of human waste, ashes and waste water, dig a small hole at least 200 feet from water and 6-8 inches deep. Do not bury food waste in the hole, as animals will dig it up.
  • If you pack it in, pack it out, and always remember to LEAVE NO TRACE!
