Spring Hikes 2008
Halverson Bar — This will be an all day hike. the total distance covered will be approximately 6 to 8 mies. Halverson Bar has a rich cultural and natural history. we will investigate remnants of old mining sites and homesteads. We may even spot various birds of prey hunting or simply soaring on the canyon winds. Wees Bar — This will be an all day hike. the total distance covered will be approximately 9 to 10 miles. Wees Bar has a rich cultural and natural history. We will investigate remnants of the old Priest Ranch and view ancient petroglyphs and the old Wees house. We may see various birds of prey hunting or simply soaring on the canyon winds. Raptor Banding — This will be an all day activity. Help band nestling western screech owls or ferruginous hawks. The NCA biologist has been studying the productivity, food habits, movements, fidelity to nest site and mate and annual weight cycle of western screech owls. Nestling ferruginous hawks are banded to study nest productivity. Raptor ID (Identification) Lecture — Learn how to identify the raptors seen in Southwest Idaho during this two-hour lecture. Raptor ID Field Trip — This will be a half day activity; back to town by 2-3 pm. Tour the western portion of the NCA and practice your identification skills in the field. Stops will be made at locations where it is typical to see certain species.
