Fishing

Northern Idaho is a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts. More than 11,000 miles of perennial streams occur in northern Idaho. About 129 miles of these perennial streams cross BLM lands. There are also 263 acres of lakes and 465 acres of wetlands that provide potential habitat for 37 fish species (19 native and 18 nonnative [introduced] species) in the Kootenai, Pend Oreille, and Spokane Rivers (includes St. Joe, St. Maries, and Coeur d’Alene Rivers).

Anglers will find native fish species including rainbow trout, kokanee salmon and redside shiner, and alpine lakes and rivers are regularly stocked with non-native species such as brook trout, brown trout, and bass. Huckleberry Campground, located on the St. Joe River is an excellent site for those excited to experience fly fishing on the St. Joe.

For additional fishing information and regulations, visit the Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) Website.
