Recreation Sites & Activities
Summary Table
BLM areas are most highly valued for viewing scenery, experiencing nature, escaping crowds and stress and being physically active. The Coeur d’Alene Field Office offers 18 developed recreation sites and several primitive backcountry areas. Developed fee sites include: Blackwell Island Recreational Site, Huckleberry Campground, Killarney Lake Boat Launch, Mica Bay Boater Park, Mineral Ridge Boat Launch and Windy Bay Boater Park.
Most recreation activity centers around Coeur d’Alene Lake, which offers outstanding fishing, hiking, boating and nature viewing. Other popular activities in the area include camping, nature study, photography, picnicking, wildlife viewing, backpacking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and OHV use. Visitors are also encouraged to explore off the beaten path, and camping is allowed in non-designated areas on BLM land. But if you choose to do this, please remember to stay on established roads and trails, “leave no trace,” and “pack it out.” Be prepared for wide variations in temperature and rapidly changing weather conditions in this mountainous region. Also, be alert and inquire locally regarding wildland fire conditions and seasonal travel restrictions.
Several other agencies manage a vast array of recreation sites and public land areas in northern Idaho. The Idaho State Parks and U.S. Forest Service Idaho Panhandle National Forest websites have information about other recreational opportunities in region.
