Blue Creek Bay Recreation Project Plan - Implementation

The first of four phases of implementation of this project was completed in summer of 2010.  This included the installation of a waterfront day-use access area that includes parking, toilets, picnic sites, public docks, and a small hand-carry watercraft launch.

The second phase, scheduled for summer of 2011, will be a trailhead facility to access about 4.5 miles of non-motorized trails.  The trailhead will have parking for a dozen passenger vehicles, two bus or horse trailer combinations, a toilet, kiosk, and a small interpretive amphitheater area.  The facility has been designed to be universally accessible to persons with disabilities.

Phase three will be a 900 foot long fully accessible interpretive trail along the western edge of the meadow at the head of Blue Creek Bay.  The path will have up to three viewing areas complete with interpretive panels and gravel parking area for about four vehicles.

The fourth and final phase of the project will be a short loop or spur trail to an overlook of historical remnants of the Mullan Road, the first road constructed over the northern Rocky Mountains, completed in the early 1860s.  The Blue Creek Bay area contains one of the few undisturbed remnants of the Road in north Idaho, and this is yet another feature that makes this area so special.  The Road remnant is to be nominated for the National Historic Register and the interpretive trail will include panels describing the Road, its purpose, and the challenges of its construction using only hand tools and stock.
