Wilderness Study Areas combine with public lands
managed by the BLM Owyhee Field Office
More than 517,000 acres of public lands in the Owyhee Canyonlands have been designated as Wilderness. Certain lands from 8 former Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) in the Bruneau Field Office are now part of the BLM's National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS).
Lands included in these former WSAs but not designated as Wilderness, along with all lands in the Upper Deep Creek, and Sheep Creek East and Sheep Creek West WSAs, are released for multiple use management under the Bruneau Management Framework Plan (MFP) or the Jarbidge Resource Management Plan (RMP).
The BLM is developing specific plans for managing these Wilderness areas according to guidelines in the Wilderness Act, and for the waterways designated as Wild & Scenic Rivers. View detailed maps (PDF) showing the Wilderness boundaries by clicking on the thumbnail images below.
