Roberson Trail East Hike
Trail Map | Elevation Profile
This enjoyable, scenic hike follows a trail constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s. The trail descends steeply in a basalt canyon to the Bruneau River. Roberson Trail East is easier to follow than Roberson Trail West, although the road access to Roberson Trail West is easier than the road access to Roberson Trail East.
Directions: Take Hwy 51 south to the town of Bruneau, turning left/east on Hot Springs Road (unmarked) at the One Stop Café. Reset trip odometer immediately.
00.0 Hot Springs Road at Hwy 51.
17.9 Left/south on unmarked road.
20.6 Right/southwest on unmarked road marked with carsonite posts.
23.4 Stop and park at the Y.
Navigating the trail: .57 miles, 600’ vertical to valley floor.
- From the Y in the road, take the right fork walking 150’ to find the trail to the right/west. (The Y is actually a loop.)
- Descend into a small drainage. (Use caution at the top of the canyon where you will find the steepest, roughest parts of the trail).
- You will veer to the right at first, and then follow the trail to the left. (You will notice that the left area provides more shade, cooler temperatures and native vegetation).
- Descend towards the river, cutting through the rocky area to avoid patches of poison ivy.
