Idaho giant salamander
When the word “giant” is in your name, it must mean you’re the biggest around. And in fact, the Idaho giant salamander is the largest salamander found in Idaho. These salamanders have thick bodies and heads, but they are not as big as they sound. They grow to be about 33 cm max, (just over one foot long).
Habitat: These “big” amphibians have to live near water, so they can usually be found under rocks and logs in humid forests, near mountain streams, or on rocky shores of mountain lakes. They are very secretive creatures and are rarely found in the open, so keep your eyes on logs and bark; salamanders like the moist environment.
Food: Their young, called “larvae” feed on a wide variety of fish, tadpoles, or other larvae-stage salamanders. The adult Idaho giant salamander eats small snakes, shrews, mice, and other salamanders.
