Black Butte is a volcanic crater and major landform north of Shoshone, Idaho. It's a striking illustration of the recent volcanic history of the Snake River Plain. Rock cairns mark the short-but-challenging summit approach. Hikers must traverse a half-mile of rugged, broken lava to achieve dramatic views from the crater rim.
Location
About 16 miles north of Shoshone on Highway 75
The shortest access road approaches from the west, but the route is primitive and requires a high-clearance vehicle. A better road approaches the Butte from the east but involves a longer hike to the summit.
