Sand Mountain WSA

General Location 
About 10 miles west of St. Anthony, Idaho

Natural Features 
Part of the largest sand dune complex in a natural condition on the Columbia Plateau. A portion of the WSA is within the Nine-Mile Knoll Area of Critical and Environmental Concern (ACEC) and the St. Anthony Sand Dunes Research Natural Area (RNA).

The St. Anthony Sand Dunes Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) receives some 220,000 visitors each year.  Most recreational use occurs on 10,000 acres of open sand within the WSA boundary.  This use has increased dramatically (as much as 1,000%) in the years since the WSA was designated.  Much of it comes in the form of motorized (OHV) use.
