Grazing
Grazing use by livestock is measured in terms of AUMs. One AUM is equal to the amount of forage used to support one cow and calf for one month, which is approximately 800 pounds of forage. The field office can license up to 74,358 AUMs for cattle, 11,986 AUMs for sheep and 420 AUMs for horses totaling 86,926 AUMs annually. Idaho BLM is currently conducting assessments of all grazing allotment to determine if Idaho's Standards for Rangeland Health are being achieved. Periodic assessments to assess allotment vegetative conditions and rangeland health are conducted using indicators that are described in the Idaho Standards for Rangeland Health and Guidelines for Livestock Management. If an assessment determines that an area is not meeting the standards for rangeland health, the field office prepares an analysis that identifies opportunities to adjust grazing management and initiates changes, where needed, to improve rangeland health.
