Recovery Act Funds Road Maintenance, Graffiti Removal and Trail and Visitor Service Improvements at Jump Creek Canyon

Project fact sheet

October 29, 2009 — The road to the lower (creekside) parking area at the BLM Jump Creek Canyon Recreation Site was closed to vehicle access for a short time to allow filling and grading work.  The site, including the canyon trail to the waterfall and the comfort station at the trailhead, remain open for day use (dawn to dusk) during maintenance.

Work crews spread gravel to fill washed-out areas at the foot of the steep hill where the road meets the parking lot (above).  Seasonal flooding had washed gravel off the roadway, making it difficult or impossible for low-clearance or two-wheel-drive vehicles to climb back out of the parking lot. The newly spread gravel was graded, compacted and treated to avert future washouts.

The work was accomplished using funds allocated to the BLM under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  Along with road work, BLM crews are repairing flood damage around the site's toilet, removing vegetation from picnic areas, rebuilding fire rings, and removing graffiti from the canyon walls.  Crews also installed a staircase and waterbars on the West Rim/Overlook Trail.

More than 40 BLM projects across Idaho were selected to receive Recovery Act funding, including more than a dozen BLM sites in the Boise District.  Follow the progress of each ARRA project on http://www.recovery.gov and on http://recovery.doi.gov .
