Members of the Idaho Youth Corps (IYC) rebuild the West Rim trailhead

Trails and visitor facilities at the popular Jump Creek Canyon Recreation Site in Owyhee County have been refurbished.  Work was done with the help of the Idaho Youth Corps (IYC).  An IYC crew built a new cutoff on the Falls Overlook Trail (right) and installed water check dams along the Goat Trail.  BLM crews repaired flood damage to the access road, parking lot, picnic areas, and toilet facilities, and removed graffiti and other signs of vandalism that had marred the site.

Oregon-California Trail ruts on a ridge in southeastern Idaho
Portions of the Oregon Trail and the Hudspeth Cutoff of the California Trail run through the Pocatello Field Office in southeastern Idaho.  An ARRA contract funded an inventory of archaeological sites and cultural resources found along these 28 miles of trail - including places where wagon ruts are still visible (left).  The BLM can now better plan for the monitoring, maintenance, signing and interpretation needed to protect important trail resources and the associated landscape.

Workers construct a log-rock bard to stabilize the shoreline of the St. Joe River at the BLM Huckleberry Recreation Site.

Winter ice scouring was eroding the river shoreline at the popular Huckleberry Campground in the Coeur d'Alene Field Office. Under an ARRA-funded contract, workers installed log-and-rock barbs along the river shore, protecting campsites that see more than 27,000 visitor-days of use each year and restoring habitat in the St. Joe River for the endangered bull trout.

Sheep cross Camas Creek in the Shoshone Field Office using the aging Macon Bridge, which will be rebuilt next summer using Recovery Act funding.

A band of sheep uses the Macon Bridge to cross Camas Creek in the Shoshone Field Office, on their way in from summer pasture.  First built in the early 20th century, bridge approaches and supports have been dangerously weakened by seasonal high water flows in the creek.  The BLM will soon advertise a contract to replace or rebuild the bridge.
