2012 Managed Deer Hunt at Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area

LORTON, VA – The Bureau of Land Management held a successful Managed Deer Hunt at the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area located on Mason Neck, Virginia, from January 19 through 21, 2012. For this antlerless hunt, participants were chosen through a lottery process utilizing archery, shotgun or muzzleloader. Any hunter needing accessibility accommodations or a hunter’s aide was able to make arrangements with the Lower Potomac Field Station staff in advance.

All Parcels Sold in December Oil and Gas Lease Sale

SPRINGFIELD, Va.—The Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States quarterly oil and gas lease sale resulted in competitive bids for all parcels offered. The sale was held at the BLM-Eastern States Office, Springfield, Va. on December 7, 2011. The combined bids brought in $499,111 that is distributed between the Federal government and states where the parcels were located. Regulations require the bidding to open at $2.00 per acre. More than 17,646 acres were offered in the sale parcels.

It’s another beautiful Fall day, although the temperature outside is a bit deceptive. Meadowood is dusted with red, orange, yellow and brown and the birds are preparing for the snow to come. We are still making repairs to the flood damaged trails and bridges and continue to work on the west side mountain bike trail. We have submitted another proposal to move forward with the Mason Neck Gateway kiosk project.

Names entered into the drawing will include those taken from the Mason Neck Refuge orientation and those from postcards (download here) or e-mails: jreffit@blm.gov (put HUNT in the subject line) marked no later than December 19, 2011.

Wisteria Island Found to be in Federal Ownership

SPRINGFIELD, Va. – The Bureau of Land Management Eastern States (BLM-ES) office in Springfield, Virginia, has reversed a previous decision regarding the ownership of Wisteria Island near Key West, Florida. Further review of historic documents by BLM-ES subject matter experts, revealed that Wisteria Island has been in a protected status since 1908.

Over 160 volunteers showed their community support by rolling up their sleeves and grabbing gloves, shovels, loppers and wheelbarrows to help repair some of the recent storm damage at the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area in Lorton, Virginia. They were on site Saturday morning, September 24, to support the 13th annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD) as well as Meadowood’s 10th anniversary.

SPRINGFIELD, Va.-- On September 24, 2011, more than 180,000 volunteers at over 2,000 sites throughout the United States are expected to volunteer to help restore the beauty and vitality of our public lands as part of the 18th annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD). This year’s event will also commemorate the 10^th Anniversary of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA).

Mark Your Calendars -- NPLD Coming to Meadowood

Americans will soon be celebrating National Public Lands Day (NPLD) for the 13^th consecutive year. Join us on September 24, 2011, at the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area’s Mustang Trailhead, 10702 Harley Road, Lorton, Virginia, 22079, from 9:00 am until noon. There will be a variety of activities for all ages to enjoy.

Choose from guided nature walks, a photo contest, kids crafts and fun games, an equestrian ride, mountain biking or explore the many natural areas at Meadowood. Then at noon, pick up a free NPLD t-shirt and relax with lunch provided on site.

This day will also also highlight the 10^th anniversary of Meadowood. Visit a special exhibit that tells the story of the site’s 2001-2011 history. Special tokens to remember the day will be offered free throughout the morning event.

NPLD supports the Let’s Move Outside initiative. Everyone benefits from fresh air, sunshine, activity and nature’s welcoming environment. So reduce your stress level and come to Meadowood’s double celebration – a 10^th anniversary and the 13^th NPLD anniversary!
