Supplemental Environmental Assessment (SEA) for Barn Improvements

The Meadowood Horse Barn in Lorton, Virginia.

The Bureau of Land Management Eastern States (BLM ES) will make upgrades to the Meadowood Barn at the Meadowood SRMA previously approved on April 10, 2014, as well as a series of additional minor improvements in and around the barn.  The SEA outlines the environmental impacts of alternatives for the facility, and contains a detailed outline of proposed improvements.

All of the horses that are currently housed in the barn will be moved outside during the approximately six-month construction period from September 2015 to March 2016. Having full access to the horses outside the barn during the construction period will also minimize disruption to the horseback riding operations of CAS, Simple Changes, and the public.

The proposed action addressed in detail in the SEA includes:

  • Grading inside and outside the barn
  • Installation of temporary feeding areas and shelters for horses in main pastures
  • Additional fencing constructed as needed in the pastures
  • Re-route existing recreational trail in southeast pasture
  • Temporary lighting of outdoor riding arena; solar lights along pathway leading to arena
  • Grade and incorporate new substrate in outdoor arena
  • 3 staging areas for construction equipment
  • Use of existing farrier shed to house Simple Changes horses during construction
  • Post construction, rotate two pastures into use for rest-rotation of main pastures
