Nature Walks:

Come see what's happening on the Mason Neck peninsula!

Monthly nature walks led by experienced naturalists with the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia begin again this spring at Meadowood Recreation Area. Come enjoy majestic hardwood forests, open meadows, streams, and ponds and watch for wildlife, identify spring flowers, and see what else is happening as the seasons change. The spring and summer seasons bring tree frogs and toads, butterflies and dragonflies, migrating birds, fox cubs, fawns, and rare wildflowers. Naturalists leading the walks will help you identify and understand the wildlife and fauna you discover as you hike Meadowood's trails.

The nature walks start at 8:30 a.m. in front of the main BLM office located at 10406 Gunston Road, Lorton, Virginia. Enter at the main entrance, proceed down the driveway, past the large stables to the building in front of the radio tower. The nature walks cover portions of Meadowood's enchanting trail system and generally run 1 - 2 hours, depending upon your own interests and capabilities. Sturdy walking or hiking shoes and binoculars are recommended.

Volunteer Work Days:

This Spring, with your help, we hope to put some finishing touches on projects, rebuild sections of the Thompsen Creek Trail, widen and put gravel on the Meadowood Trail on the east side of Belmont Blvd, and building the new section on Meadowood West.  We will also be doing some erosion control work behind the stables.

Trail building, earthwork, carpentry, leaf raking, rock work, landscaping trash pickup: come help us out...our volunteer work is a great way to get some outdoor exercise, work in some beautiful settings, learn some new skills, and make a contribution to your public lands that will benefit the community.

Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and work clothes, and bring their lunch.   Volunteers under 15 and under should be with a parent or adult supervisor who can sign their volunteer form.  BLM will provide drinks and snacks.   We won't work if it's raining or snowing.
