WANTED
Medusahead Rye

This extremely competitive winter annual, originating from Eurasia, crowds out even cheatgrass, another winter annual. Its barbs may cause dangerous puncture wounds to grazing animals, or become caught in the paws of dogs and socks of hikers. Once dominant in an area, rehabilitation or restoration of the area can be very difficult or expensive.

Distinguishing Features

Up to two feet tall.

Leaves are more or less rolled, one-eighth inch wide or less.

Flowering part of the plant is a long-awned spike that is nearly as wide as it is long. Mature awns are twisted, one to four inches

If You Spot This Culprit,

Report the location to a local land manager or park ranger.

Avoid walking on, driving on, or camping in infested areas.

Remove all weed seeds from your clothing, shoes, pets, camping gear, and tire treads before moving on.

We have reason to believe this criminal weed is hiding out in the surrounding area.
