"Wild About Wapiti" in BLM's Ely District, Nevada

Teachers in Nevada went "Wild About Wapiti" at a two-day training session sponsored by the Nevada Division of Wildlife with assistance from the BLM Ely District. "Wapiti" is a Native American word for elk. The program was adapted from Project WILD materials, including An Educator's Guide: Wild About Elk, which was funded by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Thirty teachers from Washoe County (Reno area) traveled 310 miles (one way) across Nevada to participate with teachers from White Pine and Elko Counties in this environmental education workshop.

The highlight of the workshop for many of the teachers was the opportunity to view elk "up close and personal." BLM staff led an early-morning field trip along the Ely Elk Viewing Area. Fifty cow and calf elk were seen within a few feet of U.S. Highway 50, about 12 miles south of Ely. In response to the National Watchable Wildlife Program and in partnership with other local agencies, BLM has used grants from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to develop a rest stop and interpretive viewing area along the highway.

Activities included "Enormous Elk," adapted from the Project WILD Aquatic Education Activity Guide's "Whale of a Tail." In a group photo, teachers hold elk antlers; they're standing in front of butcher paper, which was used to trace a life-size elk image from an overhead projection.
