"We'd rather be . . . FISHIN'!"

Eastern States Office's Kids' Fishing Day

The Eastern States Office's Kids' Fishing Day is an annual springtime event promoting volunteerism and environmental education. Assisted by staff of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and members of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS), Region 1, Eastern States volunteers treat about 50 inner-city children to a Saturday afternoon of fun, food, and fishing!

The nine- to eleven-year-old youngsters are students at Eastern States' "adopted school," Miner Elementary School in Washington, D.C. They learn about ecology and fishing techniques through participation in such activities as "Pathways to Fishing," a 12-step educational workshop in which BASS members discuss fishing ethics, demonstrate knot-tying, and show the young anglers the proper way to cast a line.

The kids then set out to hone their newly-acquired angling skills in BASS supplied boats (accompanied by BASS volunteers) or from the riverbank. After about two hours of "catch and release,"everyone returns to shore for a tasty barbecue provided by local businesses and served by BLM volunteers. Many different types of achievement awards are then conferred for the various skills acquired over the course of the day. The tired and happy kids return home that evening with new talents, carrying fishing-goodie packs provided by our generous sponsors.
