Feature Program of the Month

This month marked the official opening of the Campbell Creek Science Center. Tucked in the forests of the Campbell Tract in the heart of Anchorage, Alaska, the center offers outdoor learning experiences for children and serves as a regional resource for environmental education. The center is operated by the Bureau of Land Management with assistance from it many partners and volunteers.

School groups, scout groups, and other civic groups may reserve the Center for classes, meetings and conferences on subjects related to natural resources. Participants can explore the rippling creeks and quiet spruce-aspen forests of Campbell Tract on a network of trails, discover the area's wildlife and wildflowers and learn about the role people play in the local and global environment. The Center features a 10,500 square-foot central building with classroom, library, kitchen, dining room, green house, caretaker's quarters, interpretive displays, and "living stream" aquarium.

A variety of educational programs promote an awareness and understanding of the natural processes of the subarctic environment of Alaska. Sessions last from one-half day to one week. Reservations are required and fees are charged to help defray operating costs. Individuals can use the library for self-study at no charge during normal operating hours provided there are no conflicts with scheduled classes.
