Public lands in Eastern States are relatively small compared to the west—only about 20,000 acres in the 31 states bordering on and east of the Mississippi River. But these locations are significant, such as the Vermilion Islands in Minnesota, scenic beaches in Florida, and open space in Maryland and Virginia. BLM educational programs in Eastern States include environmental education camps for urban children and partnerships with local schools, helping to raise awareness of public lands throughout the country. BLM's Eastern States office also manages an extensive wild horse and burro education program, and provides information on more than nine million historical records of land ownership in the United States.
