Welcome to Our New Website

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Environmental Education website began in the early days of the World Wide Web (1996) with the posting of information about educational opportunities on public lands. In 1998 and 1999, the site was revamped and expanded. Since then, we have built up a large archive of materials that may be useful to teachers and students of all ages.Screen image of home page

Now we have given our site a completely new look, and a new name: BLM Learning Landscapes. The title reflects our efforts to bring the educational resources of BLM's public lands to teachers and students anywhere in the world.

BLM manages more land than any other federal agency. Its programs and projects are spread over 262 million acres, mostly in the western U.S. Our new website is an attempt to organize our archive of material, and also link to the many educational products and programs developed in BLM's state and field offices.

Here's an overview of how the website is set up.

The Home Page features three main sections of the site: TEACHERS, STUDENTS, and EXPLORERS.

The TEACHERS section includes a listing of Teaching Resources in nearly 30 topic areas. Teachers looking for materials on a variety of topics, from archaeology to water resources, should check here for links. The Teacher section also includes a listing of more than 75 classroom activities on related subjects, and a correlation of several of our activities to national standards of learning for education. Most of the material here is based on our long-running series of in-depth articles that have appeared since 1992 in Science and Children magagzine, published by the National Science Teachers Association.

STUDENTS has links to several student-oriented BLM sites, as well as a special section called Homework Helpers with links on more than a dozen "hot topics" such as dinosaurs and fire. We have scoured BLM's state and field office web sites to find the best information for student projects.

EXPLORERS is designed for explorers of all ages. It has links to several of the BLM-managed National Conservation Areas and National Monuments, and two sections with links: Get Out and Join In highlights volunteer opportunities, urban campouts and field trips, and detailed information on service projects and internships on BLM lands. Lifetime Learning is similar to the Homework Helpers in the student section. It includes BLM resources on such topics as mapping and the transcontinental railroad.

If you are looking for information on a particular state, click on Programs In Your Area from the buttons on the left side of each page. The state pages have teacher and student links organized by state. We also have links to BLM state web pages and their environmental education resources.

Left side buttons also include:

  • Get to Know Us: A description of BLM and what it does;
  • Contact Us: Listings of BLM Environmental Education Coordinators in state and national offices
  • Feedback Form: An online form for your comments;
  • Search our Site: A full-text search for the BLM national environmental education web pages.

We hope you enjoy visiting our site.If you have any suggestions, please let us know!
