National Public Lands Day:
Fourth Saturday in September
The nation's premier workday on behalf of the public lands, National Public Lands Day extends an invitation to volunteers of all ages to work on and learn from the public lands and their natural resources. National Public Lands Day is a partnership of Federal agencies with State and local governments, private businesses, and citizen volunteers, who are invited to invest in our nation's public lands. Individuals, family groups, classes, and community organizations are welcome!
Since its inception in 1994, National Public Lands Day has grown from a workday that took place at only three BLM-administered sites into a true nationwide event involving numerous Federal and non-Federal partners. Thanks to the steady growth of the NPLD program, in 2006 alone National Public Lands Day enlisted the efforts of approximately 100,000 volunteers at 1,000 sites across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, and even extended into U.S. military bases overseas. Millions of dollars in improvements to the public lands are accomplished on NPLD each year — work that could not be performed without the NPLD Partnership and NPLD volunteers.
NPLD participating Federal land management agencies are: BLM, USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Defense, Bureau of Reclamation, and Tennessee Valley Authority. The Environmental Protection Agency is a supporting partner, and Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc., is NPLD’s national corporate sponsor. Numerous State and local governments and thousands of local partners also participate, as does the Public Lands Foundation. Overall program coordination is provided by the National Environmental Education Foundation, which maintains a consolidated National Public Lands Day website offering information and project resources.
