A new web page for the Jamboree now appears on the BLM Environmental Education web site.

TENTS ERECTED--Two large tents have been set up on our site for the Archaeology exhibit and the Paleontology exhibit. We are using the Lafayette Tent Company, the same vendor who is erecting tents for the entire Scout Jamboree.

TICK SPRAYING COMPLETED--The Army this week completed its task of treating the entire Conservation Trail area for ticks. This is a preventative measure that will reduce the hazard from ticks during the Jamboree event. For more on ticks, see our healthsafety.pdf, our Health and Safety document online.

PERMIT APPROVED--We have received a permit from Fort A.P. Hill for the digging of post holes for fences and interpretive panels. There are more than 40 different signs in our exibit (see our site plan for locations), and each one will be printed on heavy vinyl and attached to 4x4 posts. Stand by for a post hole digging party....

THE MISTING TENT at the Firewise Exhibit is likely to be one of the more popular sites on a hot summer afternoon in late July....Staff from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise participated in a conference call yesterday to firm up plans. Among the items of interest--the Firewise exhibit will have a major giveaway item (likely to be a "logo'd water bottle holder strap" )--more details later...

THE ARCHAELOGY GROUP will be having a conference call this PM (Wednesday) to finalize plans for its adobe construction project. A major hurdle will be the delivery to the site of 30,000 pounds of adobe bricks. BSA has offered a forklift to help unload the truck.

BLM's WEB SITE will feature an extensive section on the Jamboree. It is designed to be a permanent addition to our environmental education pages, with information for scout projects on public lands.

DON'T FORGET YOUR HEALTH FORM--We need these by July 10 in hardcopy form to deliver to the Jamboree. They will be destroyed after the event. Contact Doug Blankinship for details.

UPDATED DOCUMENTS-- The site plan reflects changes to the Firewise exhibit. The roster includes information received this week from Firewise and Mountain Biking crews.

Overview of the Exhibit

The BLM exhibit, Walk on the Wild Side, will encompass five interactive exhibit areas on the following public lands topics:

Living with Fire: This component will teach Scouts about both the importance of fire to natural systems, and how to create a Firewise home near wildlands. In the interactive Firewise Challenge, Scouts will have only a few minutes to make two kid-size homes as firewise as possible. Appropriate props and effects will be employed to give the experience a realistic feel, and successful Scouts will be given a reward.
Ancient Life, Frozen in Time: Scouts will have the opportunity to interact with real-life paleontologists in a tent-museum. Over the duration of the Jamboree, specialists will be uncovering actual plaster-jacketed dinosaur fossils, demonstrating professional tools and techniques, and discussing the many public lands fossil specimens on display. A dinosaur quarry map will also be used as part of Scout activities.
Buildings from the Earth: This cultural resources exhibit will focus on Spanish and American Indian adobe structures, allowing Scouts to experiment with various adobe brick recipes and actual on-site brick making. The exhibit also stresses the importance of guarding the past by protecting cultural resources on public lands.
Ride Lively, But Lightly: Using natural obstacles and terrain irregularities on the BLM site, International Mountain Bicycling Association representatives will give mountain bike riding performances to demonstrate riding techniques that are safe, ethical, and fun. Tread Lightly! and Leave No Trace ethics will be stressed.
Silent Invaders: Scouts will negotiate a complex green maze by correctly answering questions related to invasive plant species, the habitat problems they cause, and what Scouts can do to help stop their spread.
In addition to the above, exhibit orientation and exit area displays will provide information about BLM, describe the public lands, and reinforce ethics and responsibility messages.
