Introduction

Dinosaur – The word at once evokes fear, fascination, curiosity, and passion. It brings out the scientist in all of us, as well as our inner child. In toys... movies...pop culture... and breakfast cereals, the word has become a household name.

But believe it or not, there was a time when the word “dinosaur” was nothing more than an obscure idea, an unfamiliar term, a scientific premise that you might hear in a laboratory, but never in your home. What was it that brought these magnificent beasts from a world of obscurity into fame and familiarity? The answer may be closer than you think...

Canon City - home of the Dinosaur Depot Museum, whitewater rafting, .. the magnificent Royal Gorge of the Arkansas river. But there’s something that makes Canon City even more spectacular. You see these bumps here? They are dinosaur tracks, real actual dinosaur tracks, millions upon millions of years old. And if we follow them this way....

...behind me you can see the whole of Canon City. And beyond that, those low hills are where our story begins - the story of the most famous paleontologist, the most famous dinosaurs, and the most famous battle in scientific history.

Welcome to Garden Park.

I’ll be your host as we explore the quarries of Othniel Charles Marsh, and Edward Drinker Cope. And come face to face with such dinosaurs as Camarasaurus, Allosaurus, Ceratasaurus, Happy the Haplocanthosaurus, and yes, even Stegosaurus himself.

The Garden Park fossil area is one of the richest sites in the world, both for it’s wealth of dinosaur fossils and for the dramatic history that went on here.

Good luck exploring, and I’ll see you on the trail.
