NOTICE OF DECISION: LOWRY PUEBLO FUELS REDUCTION PROJECT IN CANYONS OF THE ANCIENTS NATIONAL MONUMENT

On September 5, 2007, LouAnn Jacobson, Manager, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, signed the Decision Record and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Lowry Pueblo Fuels Reduction Project.

The proposed action was selected as the preferred alternative. The objective of the project is to protect Lowry Pueblo and the associated interpretive and recreation facilities from high-severity wildfire. The project involves reducing fuels on about 40 acres around Lowry Pueblo within the boundaries of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. The thinning would be accomplished through the use of a hydro-axe and hand thinning. Limited pile burning may occur in non-sensitive areas to consume the thinned material. About five acres around the pueblo and picnic area would be treated with Plateau herbicide to evaluate the effectiveness of the herbicide for cheatgrass control.

The Decision Record, FONSI and Environmental Assessment are available for review upon request at the Dolores Public Lands Office, 29211 Highway 184, Dolores, CO 81323, (970) 882-7296. This decision is subject to administrative appeal for 30 days from the date of the decision. In accordance with 43 CFR 4.411 and 4.413, you may requEst a State Director review of the decision. The request must be made by October 5, 2007.

For further information concerning this Decision, the environmental analysis or administrative appeal procedures, contact Eric La Price, NEPA Coordinator, at the Dolores Public Lands Office at 882-6827.
