How to Obtain a Private Ruby-Horsethief Camping Permit

Permits are required to camp every day of the year


High-Use Season: May through September

Permits may be obtained up to 60 days in advance of your camp date, beginning March 2, 2015
Permit Office Hours:

Monday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Tuesday - Friday, 8:00 am to noon


 Please have the following information ready when you call to obtain a permit:
  • Credit card number
  • Dates of trip
  • Preferred camp sites (if known)
  • Size of group (1-25), including dogs (maximum of two dogs per site)
  • Name, address, and phone number of trip leader and alternate

You can also get a permit in person at the Grand Junction Field Office, 2815 H Road, Grand Junction, CO 81506. 

Fees during high-use season:

Children 16 years old and under camp for free. There is a strict limit of two dogs per group.  There is a maximum of 25 heartbeats per group, including adults, children, and dogs.

Changing/Canceling a Permit:

As a courtesy to other boaters who wish to camp along the river, please notify the BLM river office as soon as possible if you are unable to use your camping permit or wish to change the trip leader information. If space permits, you may transfer your permit to a different date during the same season. No refunds are given, and a permit cannot be resold.




 Westwater Permits

A permit is required to float below Westwater, year around.  Permits may be obtained from the Moab, Utah, BLM office, 435-259-7012 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. 


  Off-Season: October through April

 All permits are self-issued at the Loma boat launch at the time of your launch. No fees apply during this time of year.

Step 1 - Pick up paper permit from kiosk

Step 2 - Fill out permit

o    Name

o    Home Zip Code
o    Vehicle Information- Make, Model, License Plate Number and State
o    Launch date - The day that your boat goes on the river
o    Take off Date - The day that you take your boat out of the river
o    Launch Site - Loma, Fruita, Rim Rock, etc.
o    Number in group - Max group size is 25 people including dogs. If you are over 25 people you need to camp at 2 different sites. Each camp will also need its own fire pan and portable toilet system.
o    Number of dogs in party - There is a max of 2 dogs per camp
o    Number of watercraft - This is any boat that is on the river, not just rafts.
Step 3 - Select Campsites- Please look at the map and select the exact camp that you will be using. This will help other groups know where you are planning to camp and cut down on confusion. Fill out the campsite name on your permit and on the form at the kiosk. You must camp only at the camp you have selected. If you float past your camp please continue to the overflow campground at May Flats near the Colorado Utah border.
Step 4 - Read the stipulations on the back of the permit
Step 5 - Sign the permit- Please make sure that you print and sign your name.
Step 6 - Keep the white copy with you while on the river. You will need to show it to a ranger if asked.
Step 7 - Place the yellow copy in the slot at the kiosk, below the permit box.
