Located in southwest Colorado and bounded by the San Miguel and Dolores rivers on the West, Unaweep Canyon and Highway 141 on the north, the Gunnison and Uncompahgre rivers on the east, and Colorado Highway 62 on the south, the Uncompahgre Plateau is one of the state’s most spectacular landforms and landscapes.

The Uncompahgre Partnership (formerly the Uncompahgre Plateau Project) was initiated in 1998, when a study of mule deer habitat brought together the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, Colorado Division of Wildlife, Public Lands Partnership, Western Area Power Administration, Tri-State Generation and Transmission, Inc., and numerous other community organizations to discuss ecosystem conditions on the plateau.  The groups quickly recognized a mutual benefit in collaborating across organizational boundaries in order to achieve their common goal of improving the health of over 1.5 million acres of both public and private land.

UP Statement of Purpose

Over twelve years later, the Uncompahgre Partnership (UP) has facilitated the development and implementation of numerous projects aimed at improving ecosystem health and natural functions of the plateau landscape, using best available science, community involvement, and adaptive management practices.  UP program areas have expanded from landscape-scale initiatives to include a native plant program, invasive species management programs, research activities, and education and outreach efforts, as well as projects in areas surrounding the plateau.

The UP clearly demonstrates the Secretary of the Interior’s Four C’s philosophy of consultation, cooperation, and communication, all in the service of conservation.  In October 2004, then BLM Director Kathleen Clarke presented the partnership with the distinguished Four C’s Award at a ceremony held in Montrose, Colorado.
