| In general, one of the following types of permits could be required: |

- Commercial Permit - For use of public lands and related waterways on a recreational basis for business or financial gain.
- Competitive Permit - For any organized, sanctioned or structured use, event or activity on public land in which two or more contestants compete and participants apply for the event, a predetermined course or area is designated, or one or more individuals is contesting an established record (such as speed or endurance).
- Special Area Use Permit - For individual (private non-commercial) recreation use in Special Areas designated by statute or Secretarial order (including components of the National Trails System, the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, the National Wilderness System, and national conservation areas).
- Organized Group Activity and Event Permit - For group outdoor recreation activities or events which are neither commercial nor competitive activities. Determination is based on planning decisions, resource concerns, user conflicts, public health and safety, and/or the need for monitoring.
