As part of the San Juan Public Lands land use planning process in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service, the BLM will consider all available information to determine the mix of resource use and protection that best serves the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) multiple use mandate. FLPMA Section 202 requires the BLM to maintain an inventory of all public lands and their resources, including wilderness characteristics, and to consider such information during land use planning. Along with other resource analyses, this assessment will guide decisions regarding whether BLM public lands in the Tres Rios Field Office found to have wilderness characteristics will be: 1) preserved, 2) partially protected through management prescriptions, stipulations, and use restrictions, or 3) not managed to maintain wilderness character. |

Assessment | | | | | This assessment complies with the BLM requirement to update and maintain its inventory of wilderness resources in compliance with FLPMA sections 102, 201, and 202 and BLM Instruction Memorandum 2011-154: Requirement to Conduct and Maintain Inventory Information for Wilderness Characteristics and to Consider Lands with Wilderness Characteristics in Land Use Plans. The BLM Land Use Planning Handbook (1601-1) requires the BLM to identify broad-scale decisions that will guide future land management actions and subsequent site-specific implementation decisions. Specifically, Appendix C, Part K, Wilderness Characteristics directs field offices to identify decisions to protect or preserve wilderness characteristics (defined as size, naturalness, outstanding opportunities for solitude or outstanding opportunities for primitive and unconfined recreation, and supplemental values). | | | Inventory of San Juan Public Lands with Wilderness Characteristics
