  • Wild Horses to be Gathered in October

Wild horses in the Sand Wash HMA have exceeded the upper limit of the appropriate management level (AML) established for the HMA, which is 163-362 horses.  The current herd size is estimated at 425 animals.  A gather is scheduled to begin on or about October 17, 2008, and will likely be five days in duration.

  • Additional Air Quality Assessment to support the Little Snake Draft RMP is available for public comment

The Little Snake Field Office is in the process of revising its Resource Management Plan (RMP). The plan will provide a framework to guide subsequent management decisions on approximately 1.3 million surface acres and 1.9 million subsurface acres administered by the Little Snake Field Office in Moffat, Routt, and Rio Blanco counties. The Draft RMP/EIS was released for a 90-day public comment period in February 2007. BLM is currently analyzing the public comments and developing the Proposed RMP/Final EIS.

The Draft Additional Air Quality Assessment to Support the BLM Little Snake Field Office Draft RMP/EIS is available for a 45-day public comment period.  The public comment period closes November 24, 2008.  The document was prepared by the BLM as a result of comments received on the Draft RMP/EIS from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  This hypothetical air quality assessment provides additional information and analysis using the CALPUFF-lite modeling system.

  • Emerald Mountain SRMA moves ahead

The Little Snake Field Office is looking for input on the Special Recreation Management Area Plan.  This Plan will help the BLM meet the goals set forth in the Implementation Plan that was approved in June 2007.  The Plan was compiled from the suggestions and concerns that were expressed by the general public through six public meetings that were held from April to August 2008.

Please submit all comments to the BLM no later than September 5, 2008.  Mail comments to the Little Snake Field Office at the address listed at the bottom of this page or email to gina_robison@blm.gov.

In June 2007, John E. Husband, Field Manager of the BLM Little Snake Field Office, issued a decision approving the Emerald Mountain Recreation Implementation Plan (IP). The 4,139 acre parcel is open for recreational use and Phase 1 of trail construction on the Ridge Trail has been completed.

The BLM anticipates that it will probably be another two years before the Ridge Trail, which connects Blackmere Drive Trail to Cow Creek Road, will be completely done. However, the trail is open to mountain bikes, horseback riding, and hiking. Although the trail is not complete to BLM standards, it has already received a positive response.

The City of Steamboat Springs, one of BLM’s partners in the management of Emerald Mountain, has recently been awarded a GOCO grant to help clarify the goals and objectives of the IP for future trail and facilities development, rules and regulations, and other issues.   Six public meetings will be held over the next few months to solicit public input.
