  • NW Colorado Greater Sage-Grouse Conservation Plan Finalized

The mission of the Northwest Colorado Greater Sage-Grouse Conservation Plan is to address the needs of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) in the context of multiple land ownerships, uses, and species through a Conservation Plan.

A key attribute of this Plan is that the Northwest Colorado Greater Sage-Grouse Working Group (GSGWG) intends to enhance greater sage-grouse populations while taking into account the importance of local economies for the long-term maintenance of greater sage-grouse habitats and while maintaining all existing human uses of sage grouse habitats in Northwest Colorado. The Plan is intended to prevent or preclude the federal listing of greater sage-grouse as threatened or endangered in Northwest Colorado by demonstrating the ability and the intent to maintain or enhance greater sage-grouse populations and greater sage-grouse habitat well into the future.

  • Plan Ahead before Burning

High winds are one of the main factors that drive fires out of control.  The National Weather Service in Grand Junction provides local weather information to the public at their website:  www.weather.gov/gjt .  Obtain a weather forecast prior to beginning any projects that involve using fire and plan accordingly.  A shovel, water and bucket should always be at hand.  If ditch or agriculture burns are planned, contact your local County Sheriff's Department with the date and location of the burn.

  • Emerald Mountain SRMA moves ahead

Emerald Mountain photo

In June 2007, John E. Husband, Field Manager of the BLM Little Snake Field Office, issued a decision approving the Emerald Mountain Recreation Implementation Plan (IP). The 4,139 acre parcel is open for recreational use and Phase 1 of trail construction on the Ridge Trail has been completed.

The BLM anticipates that it will probably be another two years before the Ridge Trail, which connects Blackmere Drive Trail to Cow Creek Road, will be completely done. However, the trail is open to mountain bikes, horseback riding, and hiking. Although the trail is not complete to BLM standards, it has already received a positive response.

The City of Steamboat Springs, one of BLM’s partners in the management of Emerald Mountain, has recently been awarded a GOCO grant to help clarify the goals and objectives of the IP for future trail and facilities development, rules and regulations, and other issues.   Six public meetings will be held over the next few months to solicit public input.

  • BLM Revising Little Snake Resource Management Plan

Field Tour photo

The Little Snake Field Office is in the process of revising its Resource Management Plan (RMP). The plan will provide a framework to guide subsequent management decisions on approximately 1.3 million surface acres and 1.9 million subsurface acres administered by the Little Snake Field Office in Moffat, Routt, and Rio Blanco counties. The Draft RMP/EIS was released for a 90-day public comment period in February 2007. BLM is currently analyzing the public comments and developing the Proposed RMP/Final EIS.
