North Sand Hills Campground

Background Information:

The North Sand Hills SMRA has become increasingly popular as an OHV destination area.  During holiday weekends, visitation can be as great as 5000 visitors, with dispersed camping occurring along all existing roads and trails.  The unregulated dispersed camping has caused increasing impacts to natural and cultural resources within the SRMA.  A designated campground within the SRMA, along with the existing dispersed camping, will allevate some of the pressure to natural and cultural resources in the area.

The campground includes 13 campsites, a two vault toilet and 840 feet of new road to provide additional camping opportunities and alleviate crowding within the dispersed camping areas.    The new campground is located between County Roads 6N and 6S, with access from both county roads.  The vault toilet is located along County Road 6N, near campsite #1 which is designated and constructed to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.  The 13 individual campsites have a graveled pullout for parking which accommodates large Recreation Vehicles with trailers and one additional vehicle.  Each site has a tent pad, picnic table, and a fire ring.  Three of the pullouts are enlarged as shared parking for campsites, allowing for larger groups to camp together.
