Site Overview: This trailhead provides access to the Gunnison Bluffs trail and portions of the Old Spanish Trail on the bluffs above the Gunnison River between Grand Junction and Whitewater. These trails provides visitors an opportunity to observe scenic views and reflect on classic western history. From the trail visitors can observe the uplifted canyon country of the Umcompahgre Plateau, the lush riparian habitat along the Gunnison River, and the dry desert route of the historic Old Spanish Trail. Spring and fall are the best times to experience the trails (March - May or late August - October). Length of Trail: Approximately 6 miles between the Whitewater Trailhead and the Orchard Mesa Trailhead. Technical Level: Moderate
Directions: The trailhead is near the intersection of the Old Whitewater Road and Coffman Road west of Whitewater and southeast of the Mesa County Landfill. From Hwy 50 travel west through Whitewater to Coffman Road, or south from the landfill to the Old Whitewater Road. The trailhead is on the west side of the road approximately 1 1/2 miles southeast of the entrance to the landfill and one mile west of Whitewater.
