Using Undeveloped Camp Sites


ELEVATION CHANGE:    480'  (6160' - 5680) 

LOCATION:    22 miles south of Grand Junction 

LENGTH OF TRAIL:    5 miles round trip 

TECHNICAL LEVEL:   Strenuous 

APPROXIMATE TIME TO COMPLETE:    1 to 3 hours 

SEASON:    May - October 

FACILITIES :  None 

DRINKING/STREAM WATER:    None available. Plan to pack in 1 gallon per person, per day. 

DIRECTIONS :   Take Hwy 50 south to Whitewater, turn right onto Hwy 141. Travel 8 miles to Cactus Park sign and turn left. Follow Big Dominguez-Cactus Park Trailhead signs, approximately 7 miles to trailhead.   NOTE:   As the result of flash flooding, the road is impassable at approximately 1/2 mile off the Tabeguache Trail.  Full size vehicles must park at the posted sign near the washout and proceed on foot, or by ATV, motorcycle, horseback or mountain bike. Repairs to the route are not anticipated at this time. 

HIKING/HORSEBACK RIDING:   Cactus Park trail accesses Big Dominguez Creek with beautiful panoramic views. Opportunities for solitude and wildlife viewing.  At 2.5 miles, Cactus Park Trail meets up with Big Dominguez Creek Trail. From this point, heading east, it is another 3.5 miles to the Gunnison River or 6 miles going west to Big Dominguez Campground.

SPECIAL FEATURES:   About a mile upstream from the confluence of Big and Little Dominguez Creeks, you will find a magnificent waterfall and several large boulders with petroglyphs.
